Morning all! This concept might be vaguely familiar to some of you. I spoke about this topic briefly in my ‘5 Steps Towards Feeling More Motivated’ post, but since then I’ve been thinking about it a lot more.
Its exam season for most of us, and you know what that means…’Sweatpants, hair tied, chillin’ with no make-up on!’. Its all well and good that Drake thinks that we look fabulous like this, but in reality, we don’t feel it. When you outwardly feel gross, the gross-ness starts to creep in on you. When you feel gross in yourself, it does nothing for your motivation to get your shit done.
To combat the gross-ness while working from home, I’ve been setting my alarm and getting up a few hours earlier than I normally would. I like to hop in the shower, blow dry my hair, put a bit of make-up on, slip on a nice outfit, and begin working at my desk. I can’t express how wonderful this change has been on my confidence and my productivity. I know that our schedules are crammed and our appearances are at the bottom of our priority list, but setting aside some time for yourself in the morning can do you a world of good.
People will often associate changing your look with having to fork out hundreds of pounds for new outfits, cosmetic enhancements, accessories, etc etc. This isn’t always the case, and hasn’t always been for me. I’ve found that you can still make little changes to your appearance everyday with items that you already have lying around. Don’t get me wrong – I’m all for buying new pieces for my wardrobe, but its not always essential in order to make you feel better about yourself. A good example of this are my trusty £4 jumpers that I got from the F&F sale in Tesco about 3 years ago. I think these jumpers are super flattering on me and I love wearing them when I’m in the house all day but still want to feel good. It just goes to show that you don’t need to spend money on an outfit to make yourself feel better about appearance.
However, on occasion, it is nice to splash out a little and purchase clothing and accessories that make us feel more confident with our looks. Last week, in the spirit of exam season, I spent the entire day in my room writing up assignments (boring!). The postman had just been bearing the gift of my new blouse from Topshop – the one I’m wearing in the photo. Its super girly and super spring-y and I was dying to wear it. But it felt like such a waste wearing it indoors when It deserved to be shown off in town. In the end, out of sheer temptation, I was like “what the heck!” and ended up wearing it while I did my uni work. It was one glamorous study session, that’s for sure! It made me realise that you don’t always need to wait for that special occasion to wear your new expensive clothing. Why show it off in town to other people when you can show it off to yourself? You deserve to look your best all the time!
Changing your look doesn’t have to be as hard as you think. It can be anything from the decision to wear your favourite t-shirt to swapping out your entire wardrobe. It’s personal preference – nobody can tell you how to feel good, so do whatever feels right for you. Make that time for yourself, and remember that you don’t need to wait for that special occasion to wear those killer heels or that beautiful dress that’s been sat in your wardrobe for months.
Today is a special occasion.
